Latvian state scholarships

Citizens from more than 40 eligible countries are welcome to apply online for the Latvian state scholarships for studies and research. Call for applications for the academic year 2021/2022 is open from 1st February to 1st April.

Latvian state scholarships are provided for international students, researchers, academic and scientific teaching staff at Latvian higher education institutions.

Bachelor's students, who have already successfully completed at least 1 academic year at any higher education institution (HEI), can apply. Master’s, PhD students from any previous HEI are eligible applicants, as well as academic and scientific staff of Latvian or foreign higher education and research institutions.

Eligible countries are more than 40 countries from Europe, Asia, North and South America, which have signed an agreement on the co-operation in education and science with Latvia, or other partner countries.

The amount of the scholarship for studies is €500 per month for Bachelor’s and Master’s students and €670 per month for PhD students. The scholarship is awarded for up to 10 months for Bachelor’s and Master’s students and for up to 11 months for PhD students.

The amount of the scholarship for research is €300 per month for accommodation and €30 as daily allowance. The awarded time period of the scholarships for research is from 14 days up to 5 months.

Each applicant may submit only one application on an open call, and scholarships cannot be awarded concurrently with other grants. It should be noted that Latvian state scholarships do not fully cover all the expenses related to the studies, for example, tuition fee, travel expenses from a home country to and from Latvia and other expenses.

The application process takes place online in an electronic application system at https://scholarships.viaa.gov.lv. The application process is managed by the State Education Development Agency.
